Wide Screen but I want only to record a window

I have a Dell 34 inch wide screen monitor. I want a VMWare virtual machine. My monitor is 3440x1440 that is too big to record so I configured the VM to have a resolution of 1920x1080 so it is just a window on my monitor. That is all I want to record. I start OBS and configure it to record a window. The canvas says 1920x1080. The line below it says WIndow Capture vmware.exe winxp 17 WMware Workstation. This is the VM window I want to record. Hover OBS only shows the title bar of the VM and the copy of the VM screen is black. At this point I am lost. I can't get what is shown in the VM window to show up in the OBS window. The red sizing window changes but that is it.
