Question / Help VOD Lag problems on Twitch

Hello, I am new to streaming, and have been experimenting with different settings with different programs, tweaking high and low, but I always seem to be running into the same problem every time I record anything. Here is an example of how my streaming attempts go:

I set up OBS, no problems at all, follow the instructions on the website, and bam, I'm streaming. I open up Far Cry 2, and (take note) NO LAG on my screen. Absolutely none. So I play through the game a bit, just to demonstrate to myself how my computer can stream on Twitch.tv. I stop recording, and check the VOD which was just made as a result. To my surprise and frustration, it goes something like this - http://www.twitch.tv/mister_clox/b/428568065

If you haven't looked at the link or it's dead, what basically happens is the video starts to lag at ~1-2 fps, skipping parts of what I'm doing, meanwhile the audio is just fine. I want to stress once again that I, myself, experienced ZERO lag while streaming this video. I've tried everything: the estimator, countless FAQ solutions on the Twitch.tv website, tweaking every setting high and low, you name it. My download speed according to speedtest.net is 12.42mbps, whilst my upload speed is 1.79mbps.

If you need any more details, please let me know. Very frustrated as I'm following what looks like every rule in the book, and still getting the same result.

You are dropping a ton of frames You need to lower your bit rate to something that fits within your upload speed.

Can you run ShaperProbe and post the results? http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~partha/diffpr ... probe.html

Are you streaming over wireless, by any chance?

Also you will need to downscale your OBS resolution to compensate for the lower bit rate, too, probably down to 480p.

Here are my ShaperProbe results:

"DiffProbe release. January 2012. Build 1008.
Shaper Detection Module.

Connected to server 217.163.1.100.

Estimating capacity:
Upstream: 2182 Kbps.
Downstream: 21006 Kbps.

The measurement will take upto 2.5 minutes. Please wait.

Checking for traffic shapers:

Upstream: Measurement aborted due to high packet loss rate.

Downstream: Burst size: 14702-15079 KB;
Shaping rate: 12581 Kbps.

For more information, visit: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~partha/diffprobe"

Hope that helps. :)

I am not streaming wirelessly, I have my computer actually hardwired directly to my modem.

I will try out a lower resolution to see if that works. I think it's something I've tried before, but it can't hurt to try, will edit this post with results.

EDIT: This is what I got from changing the OBS Resolution to 480p: http://www.twitch.tv/mister_clox/b/428623255

Hmm, that's not good. Can you run a speed test at http://testmy.net and post the results of that, too?

Also, changing the resolution isn't the important part, lowering the bit rate is. All I meant is that with a low bit rate, you'll need a lower resolution to still look OK.

Speedtest.net isn't reliable for measuring speed, since it opens multiple connections whereas streaming is a single-connection affair.

Try lowering your bit rate all the way to 400 and see what happens. It will look really bad, though. You might want to consider upgrading your internet.

Packet loss generally indicates your connection is faulty, you should consider contacting your ISP.

Yeah. ISPs get away with providing shoddy/bursty connections because most consumers just assume Speedtest will give them a good result. Great for testing dead-file transfers, but useless when it comes to constant throughput; testmy will give you a much more accurate idea of what you're actually getting.

Only recommendations would be to log into your modem (if your ISP gives you the credentials) and check the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as well as any dropped packets/errors. Also in the case of a cable modem, the channels locked/bonded and bandwidth used on each, and if any of them overlap (some ISPs are doing that too, to try and squeeze even more out of the copper they were subsidized to upgrade to fiber connections).
