Question / Help OBS crash while local recording MP4 files and quitting game

Hi.

I'm trying to become a caster for Quake Live and I record my casting sessions via OBS for this. Sometimes when I quit the game without turning the stream off before hand it crashes and I can't open my MP4 file that I recorded during the session.

The file still exists and in a realistic size for the time I recorded, but I get an error opening the file in Windows Media Player. Is there any way to "revive" these files and make them able to use? It's quite frustrating when you've casted a few games and you accidentally makes most of the work go to waste :)

Thanks!

Are you letting OBS finish building the MP4 when you stop the stream? It should pop up a dialog when you stop streaming.

Yes, of course, and it works brilliantly.

But in the cases where OBS crashes rather than me stopping the stream manually, it doesn't "build" and I only get an MP4 file that cannot be used.

Hi, I thought I'd chime in as well. I get random BSODs all the time for no reason so sometimes when I'm recording using OBS my computer will crash (not because of OBS!) and I end up with a file I'm guessing contains everything I recorded but just isn't processed yet.

Does anyone know of any tools that can repair/process these files?

Maybe this could make a great feature as well in the future some time for situations where the computer or program may crash.

If you save as FLV you can just convert to MP4 later and you don't have to deal with post-processing.

Yeah I guess I have to do that until I figure out the source of my BSODs. Still I'd love to be able to recover the "unfinished" hours of footage I still have saved.

Any downsides to saving in FLV quality-wise, or possibly performance-wise in games, by the way?

And FLV is exactly the same as an MP4...they are just different containers. It is possible to convert from a FLV to an MP4 very quickly without re-encoding using a tool like ffmpeg or SUPER.
