Question / Help How can I do a better Screen Region?

Hey, guys. I had a quick question I wanted to ask.

For about two years now, I have been Streaming and using XSplit. A month ago, I wanted to stop using XSplit entirely, and decided to give OBS a try. I really am enjoying using it so far, however, I cannot entirely move away from XSplit for two reasons (One of them isn't Topic related, but I will still ask here any way.)

The one thing I really enjoyed the most with XSplit was how easy it is to set a Screen Region. Click the option, drag the cursor to one corner, then to another, and you got a nice sized window to fill up the Screen / work with Aspect Ratio and whatnot to set up a Layout. It seems like I cannot do that with OBS, which is unfortunate, because I mainly Speedrun console Games and use a program called AmarecTV, and also have some PC Games with black borders (Prime Example being the PC Release of Final Fantasy VII. There's a big bunch of Black Bars because of the Resolution I have it at.)

In XSplit, the Black Bars aren't an issue. I just go corner to corner where the Game shows up, and the Black doesn't show on Stream. On the other hand, I can't do that with OBS. If I try to mess with the Screen Region, I either end up cutting off some of the games trying to get rid of the Black Bars.

Is there an easier way to do Screen Regioning with it? Or is there a secret Plug-in that makes the Screen Region just like how XSplit's is?

Also, I have another issue. I use a Monitor with a 1680 x 1050 resolution. When I try to downscale the Resolution for Stream, I don't get a 1280 x 720 option, which is bad, because when I tested a Cast, there was Black Bars on the side of my video. Granted, they were not there when you watched in Full Screen, but if you watch it windowed, the Black Bars are obvious since I can't set it to 1280 x 720. Is there a way to modify OBS so I can make the 1.5 Downscale be 1280 x 720?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can use Shift+drag to ignore aspect ratio when resizing a source, but I don't recommend stretching aspect ratios just to "fill up the black bars". It ends up with a distorted image...you would be much better served filling the "black bar" space with other useful info, such as a chat overlay or a webcam. Look at a stream like Trihex for a good example of good use of the "black bar" space.

As for the downscaling, you have to understand that 1680x1050 is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and 1280x720 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, so you can't downscale directly from your monitor resolution. Just set your OBS resolution to 1280x720 manually.

You basically want to be using Window Capture. You select which window you want to capture from a drop down, and with Aero enabled, it will ONLY capture that window you have selected. You can further use the Sub Region feature to crop out parts of the selected window.

Oh wow. Thank you very much for that. I didn't even know that, so I might be able to use OBS full-time now.
