Definitely system or hardware issues in this case. The reason is because x264 encoder is the most commonly used encoder in the industry, and is very highly tested, and doesn't just crash like this. Every single time we've seen it crash in x264, it usually means hardware issues, such as bad memory, unstable system, or things like that. Pretty much every single time.
